How To: Zebra Striped Cake

So chic!
I have been seeing this cool, zebra-striped technique everywhere lately, and wanted to try it out for myself. I love all my striped clothing – why not cake, too? I had been putting it off because it looked like it would be really complicated. Guess what? It isn’t! It is SO easy. Your friends will be amazed at your cake wizardry, when presented with this fun cake with the zebra-striped surprise inside.

I made my cake in red and white stripes, but you can use any contrasting colours. This cake would look fantastic with vanilla and chocolate stripes! The darker the chocolate, the better.

For simplicity, use 2 two-layer boxed cake mixes – one white cake, and the other devil’s food cake.

You will need:
1 - Two-layer white cake mix (or use your own recipe)
1 - Two-layer devil’s food cake mix (or use your own recipe)
4 - 8” or 9” round cake pans
Two 1/4 cup measuring cups (so you don’t mix the colours together)
Vegetable cooking spray
1/4 cup all purpose flour
Parchment paper, cut into rounds to fit the bottoms of the cake pans
Your favourite purchased or home made icing

Step 1:
Preheat oven according to the package or recipe directions. Prepare each colour of cake in a separate bowl, following the package or recipe directions. Set aside.

Step 2:Spray cake pans with cooking spray and lightly dust all inside surfaces with flour. Place a parchment paper circle in the bottom of each pan. Line up pans on your work surface in a row.

Step 3:
Starting with your dark colour, in my example I used red, measure 1/4 cup batter and pour it directly in the centre of the pan.

Pour 1/4 cup of the dark-coloured batter directly in the centre of the cake pan.

Step 4:
Measure 1/4 cup of the light coloured batter and pour it directly into the centre of the dark batter, as shown.

Pour 1/4 cup of the light-coloured batter directly into the centre of the dark batter.

Step 5:
Continue alternating dark and light coloured batter by pouring each into the centre of the previous colour, until all the batter is used up.

Step 6:
Bake cakes according to package or recipe directions. Cool completely before assembling into a layer cake with your favourite icing.

That’s it!

I would love to see your zebra-striped creations – share them with me!
